Havana Brown Cat

Posted On September - 1 - 2011

The Havana brown cat is a British breed discovered in the 80s and it is also known under the name of Swiss Mountain. The name has a story behind it, this name was chosen because the color of the cats coat resembles the one of the Cuban cigars, dark chocolate. It is often bred with the Siamese cat because of the rarity of the Havana Brown breed. It has been classified as being an indoor cat because it does not like to hunt or run outside.

The cat does not like under any circumstances to be left alone which is why it will follow you wherever you go and cuddle whenever it gets the chance. The Havana is not a noisy cat but it will make itself notice if the situation demands it. It is very intelligent being able to open drawers, manipulating small objects or pointing at something.

The Havana Brown is a small cat which does not grow taller than 10 inches. Males are heavier than females, they can weigh between 8 and 10 pounds while the female can reach on average between 6 and 8 pounds. It is thin and has a very long hair.

They come only in one color a rich Mahoney but they can also be chocolate since the color gave it its name. They do not have any spots except kittens that may have some when they are little but they will disappear as they get older. They have short and dense fur but at the same time soft to the touch. They have a square head followed by a long and sturdy neck. They have green and expressive eyes to go along with their pointing ears.

Make sure that you brush its coat every day in order to prevent excessive shedding. Take it to the vet on a regular basis to have all its shots done and prevent any health issues that may appear during the cat’s life. Feed it quality food in order to maintain the healthy and shinny look of the fur.

It almost became instinct in the World War II because they were not bread and a consequential of that is the reduced number or pedigree Havana Brown. It is thought that today only 1000 Havana Brown cats exist.

They make excellent pets because of their playful nature but make sure you give it all the love that it needs because it is a special cat.
